Secret Southern Tanzania Parks – Exclusive Photo Safari

Whilst the famous parks of the north like Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater offer superb wildlife opportunities for photographers, not many people know that there are some superb secret gems in the south of Tanzania from parks the size of Ireland where you can be out all day and never see another human soul to parks that allow you to walk deserted beaches for miles and meet nobody except the odd fisherman and vervet monkey. Saadani National Park is the only wildlife park in East Africa where the Indian ocean can be lapping your feet whilst just metres away, there could be a curious elephant looking on whilst endangered green turtles hatch from their nests and take to the sea. Point your camera lens towards something special in Selous Nyerere and Saadani National Park which are the focus of this Tanzania safari.

Safari in Saadani

DAY
01

On arrival at Zanzibar international airport you’ll be met and transferred to the domestic terminal to join the schedule flight to Saadani National Park. The short 20-minute hop across the Zanzibar channel takes you to East Africa’s only coastal wildlife park where you’ll game drive to the beautiful Simply Saadani camp.

02

Enjoy a morning walk northwards along the beach after breakfast until you reach the local fishing village of Mkwaja. Here you’ll be guided around the village to experience local life here on the Swahili coast. After lunch back at camp, head down to the wildlife research centre to learn about the camp’s conservation projects from collaring elephant and zebra to our work with the marine park to protect endangered green turtles.

Game drive & Boat safari

03

After a leisurely breakfast, leave the camp and head straight to the Wami river for a fantastic boat safari amongst superb hippo pods and crocs. Sadaani is one of only 2 parks in the whole of Tanzania where boat safaris are permitted, the other park being Selous Nyerere national park. After a few hours on the river, you’ll game drive back to camp arriving at last light.

04

This morning, relax at the camp, swim in the ocean, walk the deserted beach, explore the colour-coded nature trails around the camp, enjoy a local canoe ride along the creek or visit our wildlife research Centre. After lunch and a rest, head out for a late afternoon game drive returning back to the camp at last light.

The road to Selous Nyerere

05

Depart after an early breakfast by car to the UNESCO world heritage site of Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve), the largest reserve in Africa. This incredible wilderness is full of wildlife and the best place to see wild dogs. It has fabulous elephant herds, giraffe, zebra, impala and larger antelope such as Sable, Hartebeest & Kudu and healthy lion prides as well as plentiful hippo and crocs out on the lakes. Arrive at Sable Mountain Lodge for dinner.

Foot safari & Maasai Village

DAY
06

Wake up at first light for a walking safari, exploring on foot the miombo woodland around Sable Mountain and following trails used by buffalo and elephants amongst other animals. The walk also heads down the Sable river where black & white colobus monkeys call out from the massive sterculia trees overhead.
In the late afternoon, head away from the park to visit a community of Maasai, long term friends of ours, who carry on their traditional way of life along the park boundary.

Safari in Selous Nyerere

DAY
07

This morning head into the park for a game drive across Selous Nyerere finishing with lunch at the stunning Lake Nyamiruba camp. The wildlife watching across the lake from each tent is exceptional.
Take a late afternoon game drive in the area around Nyamiruba before returning to camp for dinner. Marvel at the stars above whilst sitting by the campfire listening to the bush chorus.

08

A short early morning game drive from camp arrives at Lake Tagalala, where a stunning boat safari awaits offering close up encounters with crocs, hippos and myriad birds. After brunch and a relax at camp, take a late afternoon game drive into a different area of the park.

Today, head deeper into Selous Nyerere on a full day game drive, allowing the chance to test a variety of terrains and hopefully discover some of the park’s fantastic wild dogs amongst other target species.
