Tanzania Entry Requirements: Everything You Need to Know - 2024 update

A Tanzania safari is an incredible adventure. However, before embarking on your journey, it’s useful to get the low-down on entry requirements. Whether you are a first-time or experienced traveller you don’t want to get caught out. Here, we'll provide you with all the information you need to know.

Passport Validity for Tanzania Entry

To enter Tanzania, you must have a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining. It's crucial to check your passport's expiration date before booking your trip to Tanzania to ensure that your passport is still valid.

Tanzania Visa Requirements

All foreign nationals traveling to Tanzania must obtain a visa before entering the country, except for those who are visa-exempt. The type of visa required depends on the purpose of your visit, such as tourism, business, or study. It's essential to apply for the correct visa type.

Citizens of certain countries are exempt from obtaining a visa when traveling to Tanzania for tourism or business purposes. These visa-exempt countries include Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei, Cyprus, Dominica, Fiji, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Namibia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Romania, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Swaziland, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, and Zambia.

Foreign nationals who are not eligible for a visa exemption can obtain a visa on arrival at the airport or any border point in Tanzania. However, the visa on arrival process can be time-consuming, usually around 30 minutes. Visa application fee is 50 USD and can be paid in cash or credit card (not Amex).

You can also obtain a visa before arriving in Tanzania online.

Vaccinations & Malaria Prevention

It's essential to check the latest travel advisories and entry requirements, as they can change.

Vaccinations:

  • There are no mandatory vaccinations for Tanzania.
  • However, if you're coming from a country with ongoing Yellow Fever transmission, or if you transited through such a country for more than 12 hours, you'll need to show proof of Yellow Fever vaccination.
  • COVID-19: As of now, neither vaccination nor testing is required for entry.

Malaria:

  • Malaria is present in Tanzania, so taking malaria prevention medication is highly recommended.
  • Consult a healthcare professional or travel clinic to discuss the best option for you based on your itinerary and health.

Additional tips:

  • Check for any updates on entry requirements closer to your travel date.
  • Pack insect repellent and wear protective clothing to minimize mosquito bites.
  • Stay informed about malaria risk areas and take necessary precautions.

Travel Insurance for Tanzania Entry

Although not mandatory, it's strongly recommended that all travelers have comprehensive travel insurance to cover any unforeseen circumstances that may arise during their stay in Tanzania.

Currency Restrictions for Tanzania Entry

There are no restrictions on the amount of foreign currency you can bring into Tanzania. However, any amount exceeding USD 10,000 or its equivalent in other currencies must be declared to the customs authorities.
