A Tent With a View
superb bird-watching a stone’s throw from Serengeti
About Little Okavango Camp
Little Okavango camp opened in 2018. The western
side of the Serengeti lacked decent small and intimate lodging so the Tent with
a View team built this camp in safari style when it discovered the staggering
bird life of the area. Located just a short five-minute drive from the Ndabaka
gate to Serengeti, Little O is in a great location with easy access in and out
of Serengeti.
It’s
favoured by those wanting to overnight somewhere before entering the park and
also as a stop off on the way out of Serengeti.
The famous Lake Victoria waters occasionally rise for a period and this
water-based camp suddenly is full of Tilapia fish and hippo under the
walkways. Elephant also regularly pass
through the camp. If you have a couple
of days free, it is worth spending a few days here. You will regret it if birds
are your thing!
Little
O’s tented rooms are lovely & spacious with huge carved wooden beds and
Maasai-themed decor. The bird lounge & bar area are lovely relaxing places
to drink and eat and most guests like to sit around the fire pit before dinner.
As
well as being one of the best places for birding in Africa where you can sit in
your hide ticking off species, you might also like to weave amongst the tall
papyrus grasses and out onto the expanse of the lake. Cultural visits to a
nearby fishing village can be taken from the camp returning by boat via the
fabulous Little Okavango Tower where you can enjoy brunch and a relax whilst
taking in the views. Some guests like to
head out on a bike safari with guide down to a small lake where animals like to
come to drink. Being on the edge of Serengeti with no walls has its advantages.

As well as traditional game drives in Serengeti in our customised Land Rover Defenders, you can also head out on foot from the camp and boat on famous source of the Nile, Lake Victoria. You can be at the gate to the western corridor of Serengeti in just 10 minutes from the camp avoiding paying additional park fees simply to stay inside the park to sleep.
It’s best to
get inside the Serengeti at dawn or late afternoon to give the best chance of
predator action. When it gets hot, lions
can be seen but tend to be lazing under trees after dining. Typically, you’d awake just before dawn and
head out after a quick cup of tea or coffee and carry a packed breakfast. Then
spend the day exploring the western corridor of the Serengeti and beyond before
heading back to camp for a late lunch.
There is little in terms of wildlife that this park doesn’t have an
abundance of.
Whilst the
bike safari idea is a primarily a lovely way to explore the local area, we
discovered fairly quickly that as the Serengeti is not fenced, these invisible
boundaries mean that we often also see game, particularly elephant whilst out
and about as well as in and around the camp.
Our bike safaris pass through local farms to the edge of the Serengeti
where wildlife can often be seen across the road in the park and at the small
lake in the camp grounds.
For some
cultural immersion, head out on a guided visit around this local fishing
village on Lake Victoria to watch the morning catch being brought in and
prepared for market.
Mwaburugu is the largest village in the area and traders
come from miles around to barter for fish. It’s really entertaining to watch
people haggle whilst the sun comes up and heats the shoreline, with incredible
Marabou storks and other birds flocking around grabbing their breakfast when
backs are turned.
A lovely way
to spend a few hours in the late afternoon is on a small boat (not actual
canoes!) with your guide weaving around the narrow water channels of the Lake
Victoria flood lands. You can get up so close to some stunning birdlife
including Pied and Malachite kingfishers as well as a wide variety of weaver
birds, sunbirds, Cormorants, herons, egrets and more recently prized sightings
of Shoebills.
